Princess Anne’s ‘bizarre fascination’ revealed

The 69-year-old adores lighthouses and has visited almost every one on the British coast. Writing in The Daily Telegraph, royal expert Camilla Tominey said: “There has always been more to Anne than her 300-plus string of patronages – not to mention the somewhat bizarre fascination with lighthouses that has seen her tick off almost every example on the British coast. “

She is the patron of the Northern Lighthouse Board and in October she visited an exhibition about the tale of the disappearance of three lighthouse keepers on the Flannan Isles.

The Princess reportedly got hooked on lighthouses aged only five when she accompanied the Queen to one on the Isle of Lewis.

She has visited many lighthouses with her husband Sir Tim Laurence.

When the royal visited Dublin in April, she was shown around some of Ireland’s oldest lighthouses.

The Princess travelled to Howth where the lighthouses have guided ships since 1667.

In 2015, the Princess wrote about her passion for lighthouses in the foreward for a book.

In the forward for Scottish and Manx Lighthouses, she wrote of the “remoteness and exceptional natural beauty” of lighthouses.

She wrote: “The lighthouses stand testament to the dedicated work of the Stevenson engineers – built to last for the benefit of the mariner.

“Each light being quite different from the next as the generations of an engineering dynasty developed their own style but still very obviously and easily recognisable as Stevenson lighthouses.”

Roger Lockwood, chief executive of the Northern Lighthouse Board, of which she is patron, said to The Scotsman: “She must have visited more than 80 with us.

“It is not just about ticking off another light on the list. She also likes to see the places and conditions in which the technicians have to work.

“The princess has done all the major lights now and it will not be easy to do them all because there are many that are scattered all over the place. But it will be a remarkable feat if the princess ticks them all off.”

Speaking on The One Show in January, Princess Anne said: “I don’t tick them off to be honest.

“I think I’ve been to the ones that are the most fascinating.

“A lot of people think Bell Rock is the best, I think Skerryvore is the most beautiful lighthouse.

“And then the other one is the Flannans, which is the only place where there is a true mystery where all three lighthouse keepers disappeared, and nobody knows why.”

Footage of Princess Anne went viral this week when she seemingly avoided meeting Donald Trump at Buckingham Palace.

After the three royals had greeted the Trumps and exchanged small talk, it looked like the Queen turns to her 69-year-old daughter and makes a gesture with her arm.

Many fans believed the Queen was “scolding” her for not joining the group to do the official greeting, to which the Princess Anne just laughs and shrugs.

The video clip quickly spread on social media and Twitter users loved it.
