Three of the four lanes between junction 27 and 28 were closed as emergency services dealt with the incident. Highways England tweeted: “M1 southbound has three lanes closed between J28 and J27 due to a car on fire.

“Fire Service is on scene and traffic officers are attending to make the area safe.

“Please drive with care and be prepared for some delay through the area.”

An update by Traffic England claimed the incident was expected to be clear by 3.30pm on Friday afternoon.

At just after 2.15pm two lanes on the road remained closed because of the incident.
