The Ultimate at LightWater Valley in North Yorkshire was once the world’s longest adrenaline-pumping ride and remains Europe’s biggest.

The 1.4mile track, which winds through rural woodland, became so loved by enthusiasts that it was recreated in the hit video game Rollercoaster Tycoon.

It attracted speed junkies from around the globe to enjoy the eight-minute experience.

The ride at the theme park near Ripon was overtaken by the Steel Dragon in Japan in 2000, which is 1.5 miles long.

Now, after three decades, bosses have decided to ditch it. Work to dismantle it began today.

The park features around 30 rides and attracts 300,000 visitors a year. Owners The Brighton Pier Group say younger families are now their key market – with teenagers less likely to enjoy a day out on rides.

The Ultimate had not been in use since it was shut down shortly before the pandemic.
