Labour civil war explodes on BBC Newsnight over catastrophic Brexit election defeat

Unsuccessful Labour candidate Faiza Shaheen claimed the system for party adverts was “rigged” during a miserable ramble on the BBC Two show. She argued this was the downfall of Labour, but was challenged by former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. He tore her down in a stunning attack by reminding her Labour had won elections in the past before these incidents.

Ms Shaheen began: “The system is rigged.

“Why aren’t we talking about the fact that 88 percent of Conservative ads had lies in them.

“The ones on Facebook for instance.

“We have to do the internal reflection but we have to look at the way in which the system is working as well.”

BBC Newsnight host Emma Barnett quickly interrupted to tell Ms Shaheen that Mr Straw was shaking his head.

Mr Straw then explained: “There are lies in every election I have ever fought alright?

“And the Conservatives have always had more money to put into elections.

“But we have won elections in the past because we have had good leadership and a good programme.”

He added: “I blame the leadership of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn in particular. I also blame John McDonnell and Len McCluskey.”

Following Labour’s disastrous showing in the election, leader Jeremy Corbyn finally confirmed he would not lead the party at another vote.

An inquest into the damaging defeat has been played out publicly, since the exit polls correctly predicted Labour’s demise.

However, he wasn’t the only chief to lose their leadership.

Liberal Democrat Jo Swinson also was ousted after she was ditched by voters in Scotland.

It comes after she endured a final round of humiliation after what appeared to be her final Twitter message as party chief was mocked by the public.

She was criticised after promising her legion of followers that “there will be a way out of this nationalist surge”.

Ms Swinson starkly admitted, however, it was a “huge job”.

The ex-Lib Dem boss was ousted in the recent general election, losing her seat in Scotland to the Scottish National Party.

Her last message read: “There will be a way out of this nationalist surge, and we have to work together to fight it.

“It’s a huge job to be done, the answer is that we step up, we organise, we join together.

“Though I won’t be your leader I will be walking alongside you.”

It was signed off by Ms Swinson.
