'Kitesurfer' dies after falling onto beach wall in 'tragic accident'
A man has died after falling onto a beach wall ‘in a tragic accident’ on the south-east coast of England.
It is believed the man was a kite surfer who was blown into the concrete wall and sustained ‘serious injuries’.
Police were called to Camber Sands near Rye, east Sussex, on Saturday morning at 10.10am.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His age has not been provided but police have confirmed that he was not a local resident to the area.
An employee of the nearby The Kitesurf Centre said it is believed the victim may have been a kite surfer who was getting ready to set off on the activity for the morning.
The man, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘It looks like an incident while they were setting up their kite. They weren’t on the water.’
He said weather conditions were good on Saturday, adding that it was ‘not massively windy’.
He added that the incident was not related to their store as the man had not rented equipment from them.
The spokesman said: ‘The wind was actually very regular, around 20 knots, there were no adverse conditions at all, it was quite good kite surfing conditions.
‘This was a land-based accident, before the man entered the water, while they were setting up their kite.’
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: ‘Emergency services went to the beach at Camber Sands near Rye just after 10.10am this morning 20 July after a report that a man had sustained serious injuries by falling on to a wall.
‘Sadly he was confirmed dead at the scene. His death is being treated as a tragic accident at this time and enquiries are being made to trace next of kin.
‘He is not from the local area.’
