The Duchess of Cambridge, 38, met Prince William, 37, in 2003 and the secret to their successful relationship of 17 years seems to be that they were allowed to date first. Royal experts explained on Channel 5 documentary, ‘William and Kate: Too Good to Be True’ how the Duke and Duchess dated first unlike other royal couples. One explained that Prince Charles and Diana barely spent any time together and it turned into a “disaster”.

Royal expert Rebecca English said: “The Queen once famously said of Prince Philip that he was her strength and staple and people underestimated what effect he had on her life and how it enabled her to do the job that is expected of her.

“It’s very much the same for William and Kate.”

Commentator Victoria Arbiter added: “That’s something so many people can identify with but also starkly different to how royals had been pushed together.

“Diana and Charles had barely spent any time together before they got married.

“They certainly weren’t allowed to live together.”

Royal author Tom Quinn said: “It wasn’t like anyone else was thinking or something Kate would make a good future Queen.

“That happened with Diana and that was a disaster.”

Royal expert Neil Sean added: “I think the different between Diana and Charles and William and Catherine, they were allowed to grow, to develop, to do things that no other royal had done previously.”

Mr Quinn added that Kate was “tainted” by her upbringing as the royal struggled to make a good impression with aristocrats.

While dating William, Kate worked for her parents party supplies company and was pushed out of royal circles due to her association.

He explained that Kate was seen as a “disgrace” by old-fashioned people.

Mr Quinn said: “The old Etonians, they saw Kate’s background where she worked for a company, her parents’ company.

“The old-fashioned part of the Palace didn’t like it at all.

“Powerful people cannot help in many cases looking down on other people and wanting to preserve their little club.

“Kate was pushed out because she was tainted by association with this family who sold party hats, what a disgrace.”
