Jo Swinson loses seat amid disastrous night for Lib Dems

Jo Swinson has lost her seat in Dunbartonshire East to the Scottish National Party during a disastrous evening for the Liberal Democrats.

The Liberal Democrats are predicted to suffer a disastrous result nationally, while the SNP are predicted to win 55 of the 59 seats they are running in.

Last night’s exit poll gave the party leader a 95% chance she would lose her seat with the Lib Dems predicted to lose seven seats overall, including prominent MP Chuka Umunna.

He failed in his attempt to win the Cities of London and Westminster seat after defecting from Labour to the Liberal Democrats earlier this year.

Miss Swinson will almost certainly now resign as leader.

In a speech at the vote count, she said: ‘For millions of people in our country, these reults will bring dread and dismay and people are looking for hope.

‘I still believe that we as a country can be warm and generous, inclusive and welcoming.’

Ms Swinson added: ‘Liberal democrats will continue to stand up for these values.’
