Jeremy Corbyn compares Extinction Rebellion to Suffragettes after sparking chaos in London
Mr Corbyn heaped praise on the mayhem the group have caused in paralysing the capital and London City airport today by glueing themselves to planes during protests over climate change that have seen hundreds of demonstrators arrested by police. He likened the group to the Suffragette movement, led by Emmeline Pankhurst, who worked tirelessly to help women win the right to vote. Mr Corbyn said: “Those women that stood up for the right of women to vote, the suffragettes, were condemned mercilessly by almost every newspaper in the country, and they are now on postage stamps.
“You know how things change eventually, so let us just remember that the right of free speech, the right to protest and the right to be heard in a peaceful way is actually a very precious right that I would always want to protect.”
He was applauded by a room full of Labour party members.
He also condemned Boris Johnson and his team for their commitment to help the UYK reach zero emissions by 2050.
He said: “The Government’s target of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 is too late and the Tories are doing little to meet it – in fact investment in clean energy has fallen for three years running.
“A Labour government is fully signed up to a Green New Deal. We are already working closely with trade unions and the scientific community to develop the most radical climate targets in the world.”
This morning police arrested 12 people involved in a so-called “fly today, no tomorrow” protest involving gluing themselves to aircraft.
The group – labelled “nose-riged crusties” by the Prime Minister – have been mocked for attempting to hide diesel-powered generators in their camps.
A large machine was covered by wooden pallets in an apparent attempt to hide it despite the loud whirring noise in one of the group’s Berlin camps.

Former SAS Regimental Sergeant Major, James Deegan MC, retweeted the video to his Twitter page in view of his 16.6 thousand followers, calling the climate activists “hypocrites” as they insist on lecturing people against using fossil fuels.
His caption read: “Hypocrites absolute hypocrites. Extinction Rebellion camp using a diesel generator for power.
“Did they think the pallets made it invisible and soundproof?”
While new-generation diesel emits lower levels of carbon dioxide than petrol engines, they tend to emit higher levels of nitrogen oxides.

In built-up urban areas, these emissions mean that diesel engines are often the biggest cause of roadside air pollution.
The climate action group is currently undergoing a planned two-week protest to shut down central London.
Extinction Rebellion London’s Twitter page has responded to the video footage refuting any claims it came from one their camps in the UK capital.
They tweeted: “Trolls are posting videos of diesel generator. This is randomly off the internet somewhere.
“There are no indications in the video of #ExtinctionRebellion being present. The trees in the video are not UK & vans are parked, but all double yellows around here.”
Protestors have gatecrashed several of the capital’s iconic landmarks. They have also assembled in European capitals, Berlin and Paris.
Lambeth Bridge, Westminster Bridge and Trafalgar Square in London have been locked off.
The environmental group has confirmed up to 30,000 activists are expected to take to the streets.
They plan to shut down a dozen sites across Westminster.
The campaign group also plan to cause chaos outside key Government departments.
