Fire rips through Scottish house people told to avoid the area

People have been urged to avoid an area in East Kilbride, Scotland, after a vicious fire broke out in a property this evening.

Police Scotland confirmed earlier that a property on Whitelee Street caught fire at around 5.40pm.

Officials are yet to confirm whether there are any casualties, but dramatic pictures have shown firefighters battling columns of flame on the street.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland urged people to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing.

They said: “A number of road closures are currently in place in the Whitelee area of East Kilbride due to a fire. Please avoid the area.”

South Lanarkshire Council confirmed the closed locations in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The council wrote: “Greenhills Road in East Kilbride, from Stroud Road to Quarry Road and Quarry Road from Greenhills Road to Laurel Drive, have been closed due to a fire.”
