FINALLY! Boris’s Britain is ‘proud and sovereign’ and EU is ALREADY caving says Hannan

Following his mammoth victory on Friday, Mr Johnson now has an improved mandate to be able to negotiate with Brussels. In light of the overwhelming victory, EU officials have stated they are ready to proceed with negotiations as quickly as possible.

Writing for MailOnline, Mr Hannan insisted the UK could now live up to its potential outside of the trade bloc.

He added: “Britain is no longer a supplicant.

“We are going into these talks as a proud and sovereign nation – a nation well aware that it has other global options.

“And not before time.”

Moreover, the MEP said despite the delay in Brexit over the last three years, it is now “now clear, beyond doubt, that Britain is leaving”.

Indeed, arch-Remainer Lord Michael Heseltine admitted: “We’ve lost, we have to face up to that – we’re going to leave.”

Speaking at the EU leader summit last week, European Council President, Charles Michel stated Brussels was prepared to carry out talks as soon as possible.

Mr Michel said: “We expect a vote on the Withdrawal Agreement as soon as possible.

“We will negotiate a future trade deal which ensures a true level playing field.”

President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen added Brussels was ready to move “to the next phase” of the relationship between the two.

Despite the EU being ready to proceed with talks, there is still fear the transition period will not be completed by December 2020 from some member states.

In a pledge to complete negations within the timeline, Michael Gove guaranteed the Brexit transition period will not be extended past by the end of next year.

Speaking on Sophie Ridge on Sky News, Mr Gove said: “It will be concluded next year.

“We will be in a position, as I say, to leave the European Union before the 31st of January of next year.

“Then we will have concluded our negotiations with the EU about the new framework of free trade and friendly cooperation that we will have with them by the end of next year.”

Armed with a 78 seat majority, Mr Gove insisted negotiations would be different.

He added: “One of the things about this general election is that we saw that those who had broken their promise, those who had said they stood on manifestos that said they would honour the referendum mandate and then when they were elected to the House of Commons they tried to undermine that referendum mandate, those Labour politicians and other politicians, they were defeated.”

In contrast, the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier declared negotiations would not be completed in such a timeframe.

He said: “It is unrealistic that a global negotiation can be done in 11 months, so we can’t do it all.”

Mr Johnson will Bring his Brexit deal back to Parliament in the coming weeks.

Before then Mr Johnson will welcome the 109 newly-elected MPs in Westminster.

Today, Mr Johnson will announce his Cabinet reshuffle which could see Jacob Rees-Mogg dropped.
