An Office for National Statistics (ONS) survey has provided a damning assessment of the impact of the cost of living crisis, as a staggering proportion of people report they are struggling to get by. A massive 91 percent of adults reported their cost of living had increased compared with a year ago.

Meanwhile, 73 percent reported it had gone up in just the last month. 

The main reason given for this was primarily the price of food, which 95 percent of respondents said was driving their higher household spending, while skyrocketing gas or electricity bills were impacting 73 percent of respondents.

The ONS also stated that soaring energy bills had led to around 4 in 10 (44 percent) of adults saying they found it very or somewhat difficult to afford the expense in the latest period.

The stats are based on data collected between September 14 and 22 2022.

People have been adjusting much about the way they live to try and navigate the crisis, the report found. 

This includes 66 percent of people spending less on their essentials, 60 percent using less fuel such as gas or electricity in their home, and 45 percent shopping around more than they had previously.

Around three quarters – 76 percent – reported they were very or somewhat worried about the rising cost of living in the last two weeks.

When it comes to strategies around the work place to try and get by, one in five said they were now looking for a promotion or another, better-paying job entirely, while 15 percent were working more hours. 

Seven percent of people were going to their place of work more often in order to try and save money on their bills at home.
