Controlled explosion of suspicious package in Glasgow

A controlled explosion has been carried out on a suspicious package found at the University of Glasgow, police have said.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said the package had been received at the university earlier on Wednesday.

It was not opened and there were no injuries to university staff or students but several buildings were evacuated as a precaution, he said.

“A controlled explosion of the device was carried out this afternoon by EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal).

“Police Scotland is liaising with the Metropolitan Police in relation to their investigation into packages received in London yesterday.

“However, it is too early to say whether there is a link.”

Explosive devices were received at Waterloo Station and buildings near Heathrow and London City airports on Tuesday.

At least two of those packages appeared to have Irish stamps on them and Irish police are assisting the Met Police with that investigation.

Shortly after 4pm, Glasgow University confirmed that the “incident relating to a suspicious package in the mail room” was over and most buildings were being reopened.

Also on Wednesday, buildings at the University of Essex in Colchester were also evacuated after a suspicious package was found.

The bomb squad was called in but there were no further details given.

Earlier, a suspicious package found at a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh was found to contain only promotional goods, police said.
