Boy, 3, falls to his death from fourth floor flat on his birthday

A toddler has fallen to his death from the fourth floor of an apartment block after celebrating his third birthday, in the second tragedy of its kind in 24 hours in London.

Three-year-old Eduard Popadiuc fell from the Bridge Court tower block in Harrow, north-west London on November 1.

Eduard reportedly fell from the family home, before staff from his nursery nearby rushed to his side and administered first aid.

Little Eduard died two hours later in hospital after he’d spent the day at Little Aisha Nursery celebrating his birthday with friends.

The tragedy came just 24 hours after 18-month-old Ali Agac plunged to his death from the ninth floor of Stellar House, in Tottenham, north London.

Earlier that day, father Alexandru posted a picture of his little boy on Facebook and wrote: ‘Happy birthday Daddy’s love!!’

Heartbroken Alexandru told the Evening Standard today: ‘I don’t want to cry anymore, I do it all day and all night. He is our angel now…

‘He was the best kid in this world. He had lots of energy and used to smile all the time.’

Mary Da Costa, Manager of Little Aisha Nursery, is raising money to support the grieving family and has set up a GoFund Me page.

She said: ‘On Friday November 1, Edward was celebrating his third birthday – his very first birthday with us.

‘Edward left happy and smiling but unfortunately soon after he left the nursery to go home he had a tragic accident and fell from the fourth floor.

‘Because of the proximity of the nursery to Edwards house, Little Aisha staff members administered first aid to try and save Edward but it is with a heavy heart that we inform you that he sadly passed’.

Just the day before, little Ali is understood to have fallen from a faulty window and landed on a tower block canopy entrance in Tottenham.

His distraught mother Duygu Agac said she was ‘heartbroken’ by the loss, and called for a full investigation into why the window was not fixed.

‘He was a wonderful boy… I am heartbroken,’ she told the Evening Standard.

‘I had reported the window. The council came as an emergency but they thought there was a problem with the window frame but it wasn’t, it was the handle that locks.

‘They were due to come and fix it this week. When they came, they closed the window but the handle didn’t lock. We want a full investigation.’

Zina Etheridge, Haringey Council Chief Executive said an investigation has been launched.

The Metropolitan Police are treating the death as unexplained and continuing their inquiries.

A second GoFundMe has been set up for Eduard to help cover the funeral costs and send his body back to Romania.

It said: ‘On November 1st, 2019 Eduard Popadiuc, the son of Alexandru and Roxana Popadiuc, who was celebrating his third birthday, had a fatal accident, falling from the 4th floor… Rest in peace, Eduard’.

A Met Police spokesman said no arrests had been made and inquiries are ongoing.
