Winston Churchill’s grandson may be booted from Conservative Party over Brexit

His grandfather Winston Churchill led Britain to victory in World War II, but Sir Nicholas Soames faces being kicked out of the Conservative Party for opposing Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Brexit plan.

Soames, 71, told The Sun he would fight against the government in an effort to prevent a no-deal Brexit on Tuesday night unless he can be assured that Johnson will strike a deal with Brussels.

The son of Lady Soames — the youngest of Churchill’s five children – appeared frazzled Tuesday as he declined to comment to a reporter, snapping, “Oh, go away, for God’s sake! Stop being such a bore,” the Mirror reported.

Even if he backs down from his threat, more than a dozen pro-EU Tories have warned they will rebel against the government to stop a no-deal.

The prime minister, who has repeatedly expressed of his admiration for Churchill, published a biography in 2014 titled “The Churchill Factor: How One Man Made History.”

In the introduction, Johnson, then mayor of London, wrote: “When I was growing up there was no doubt about it. Churchill was quite the greatest statesman that Britain had ever produced,” according to The Times of London.

“From a very early age I had a pretty clear idea of what he had done: he had led my country to victory against all the odds and against one of the most disgusting tyrannies the world has seen.”

Soames has rejected any comparisons of Johnson to his grandfather.

“I don’t buy the theory that Boris is masquerading as Churchill,” he said, according to the Washington Examiner.

“I think he admires my grandfather greatly and that he sees the great lessons to be learned from Churchill’s life,” he added. “I’m not Winston Churchill, nor is anyone else for that matter.”

Soames also suggested that the late Margaret Thatcher, the former Conservative leader and prime minister, also would not have supported a no-deal Brexit.

“I guarantee Margaret Thatcher wouldn’t have taken the UK out of the European Union,” he said.
