UK weather: Met Office forecasts spike in temperatures

Britons have been baking in warm weather over the past few days, with the Met Office reporting temperatures peaked at 25.8C today in Cardiff. This has made June 1 officially the hottest day of the year but could be beaten by scorchers over the next few days.

Forecasters are predicting hot weather to continue, with highs of up to 27C forecast for Wednesday.

The sun has brought joy to Brits, falling over the half-term holidays.

This has seen beaches and parks packed with revellers, enjoying the relaxation in lockdown rules.

However, some need to be on alert later this week as the hot weather sees thunderstorms roll in.

When will UK heatwave end?

While sunny skies and hot conditions are forecast to continue, forecasters are warning thunderstorms and heavy rain could be on the horizon this week.

Netweather writes: “Thursday and overnight into Friday there could be some heavy showers, even thunderstorm working their way northwards over eastern Britain.”

There is currently a Met Office yellow weather warning in place for thunderstorms, which could see temperatures dip.

The thunderstorm warning is in place from 5am to 9am on Wednesday, across parts of southwest England and southwest Wales.

The Met Office writes: “An area of thunderstorms will move northwards into southwestern parts of the UK on Wednesday morning.

“Lightning is likely to be the main hazard from this though some heavy rain and hail is possible, with perhaps 15 to 20 mm of rain in a short period for some spots.

“The nature of thunderstorms is that many areas will see little or no rain and miss the lightning but where they do occur the increased numbers of people makes disruption more likely.”

This may see temperatures dip, however conditions are still forecast to remain hot.

The Met Office says for the rest of this week there will be a lot of fine and dry weather, however “a few thundery showers remain possible.”

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said: “Tuesday is looking very nice, warm and sunny across the board and things does change from Wednesday onwards.

“It looks like we are going to see some thunderstorms around Wednesday, a risk of a few showers on Thursday and Friday.

“It will be a little bit cooler but not desperately cold.”

On Thursday Met Office temperature maps show highs of 24C in London, Peterborough and Norwich, 20C in York and 15C in Edinburgh.

For Friday, temperatures dip yet further with highs of 20C in London, 19C in York and 17C in Edinburgh.

Into next week temperatures will dip to the average for this time of year – effectively putting an end to the heatwave.

However, it will still feel warm and conditions will become more settled.

The mercury will drop into the teens, however as always with forecasting the weather this could be subject to change.

This Evening and Tonight

Misty with low cloud for east Scotland, cool here and in northeast England.

Elsewhere clear periods and staying warm in places overnight.

Increasing cloud arriving from the southwest later with thundery showers likely for southwest England and south Wales.

Wednesday

Very warm with sunshine for most. Eastern coasts cooler with an onshore breeze and low cloud in the northeast.

Cloudier in the south with thunderstorms possible, these moving north later.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday

Nationwide temperatures lowering a little, although remaining hot in the southeast on Thursday.

A lot of fine and dry weather, although a few thundery showers remain possible.
