UK weather forecast: Britain to be HOTTER than TURKEY over Easter as temperatures SOAR
Temperatures in the UK could be hotter than in Turkey, Majorca and Corfu over Easter as a mini heatwave hits our shores. The Met Office said temperatures will hit the low 20Cs “quite widely” with a “good chance” of 23C being reached in the south of England. Istanbul in Turkey is currently forecast to peak at 12C on Easter Sunday, with rain also expected over the weekend. The Met Office earlier tweeted an interactive graphic indicating the rising temperatures with the caption: “Watch those temperatures building toward the weekend!”
How much hotter will it be than normal?
Temperatures at this time of year tend to average 10C to 13C, meaning they will be 10C higher than average.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Steve Willington said: “From Wednesday (April 17) temperatures will start to rise day by day and with the sun getting stronger at this time of year, it’s going to feel warm or very warm by the time we get to Good Friday and Easter Saturday.
“Temperatures will reach into the low 20s Celsius quite widely and there’s a good chance some places in the south could see temperatures peaking around 23 Celsius.
“With temperatures usually around 10 to 13 Celsius at this time of year, it’s certainly going to be significantly warmer than average this Easter weekend and quite a contrast to the colder weather we have seen so far this month.”
The higher temperature recorded at Easter in the UK has been reached four times before.
The high of 27.8C was reached in Heathrow, London, Mildenhall, Suffolk and Wisley, Surrey, in 1949, before hitting it a second time in Wisley in 2011.
Mr Willington added the heatwave may be short-lived as cooler weather is set to arrive early next week, although this is still uncertain.
He added: “It currently looks like more changeable and cooler weather will arrive from the northwest from Easter Sunday, however, there remains the chance that southeastern parts of the country could remain warm and settled into Easter Monday.
“With this uncertainty in mind, our advice is to keep up to date with the latest forecast if you are making plans.”
Other weather charts also show Britain will sizzle in the heat come Good Friday.
Lots of Britons are expecting to enjoy a four-day weekend for Easter.
Good Friday and Easter Monday are both bank holidays, providing adults and children with a much-deserved break.
Eleanor Bell, a meteorologist for The Weather Company, also said people should be able to bask in warm weather.
She said: “Temperatures are expected to rise above normal across the British Isles this week peaking over the Easter weekend.
“A drier end to the week is expected with high pressure over Scandinavia ridging westwards across Britain.
“Plenty of sunshine is expected for Good Friday with maximum temperatures expected to lift into the high teens to low 20Cs widely.”
