‘Bullied’ girl, 12, who committed suicide ‘felt overwhelmed by social media’

The inquest was told the teen had spoken to teachers about a “difficult home life” with her dad Christopher.

The teen claimed he would “sometimes come home, go to his room and cry”.

On the day of Jessica’s death, Mr Scatterson, 41, was woken by police at around 3.45am.

He opened his bedroom window to speak to them before going to his daughter’s room.

Officers then reported hearing a “loud scream” from the property.

Both police officers and ambulance crews tried to resuscitate the teenager but she was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

The youngster died two days shy of her 13th birthday.

Speaking at the hearing at Warrington Town Hall, paramedic Joanne Newton told the inquest she noticed cuts to Jessica’s legs as well as “RIP” written on her heel in pen.

Investigating officers later found a number of unpleasant messages between the schoolgirl and her friends in the previous days on her iPad.

Jessica’s friends allegedly knew of her tendency to self-harm, but her teachers and parents remained unaware.

The investigation also confirmed that she had been bullied at Penketh High School in April 2016.

The incident saw Jessica suffer scratches to her face and a swollen eye following an argument with a female classmate.

The matter had been reported to police but no action had been taken.

Teachers at the school claimed that Jessica loved her father but felt overwhelmed by the number of domestic chores on her shoulders, and she often worried about her dad’s emotional health.

They all admitted that while Jessica had fallen out with friends, they denied she was being bullied.

The coroner recorded a verdict of death by hanging.
