Two people have been killed and nine others injured after a pick-up truck struck several people.

The incident occurred in Amqui, a town 258 miles north-east of Quebec City in Canada.

The vehicle mounted the sidewalk, according to local witnesses, with two of the nine injured said to be in a serious condition.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested as cops investigate whether the driver deliberately drove into people.

Police have said that they believe the crash to be an isolated incident.

Police added that three children were among the injured, while the deceased were aged in their 60s and 70s respectively.

The Guardian reported Quebec police spokesperson Helene St Pierre as saying: “Everything indicates that this is an isolated event.”

“There is no more danger in the area and only one suspect.”

Provincial police told the Guardian that the man is being held at a local police station and is speaking to officers.

Officers are still working to determine the cause and any possible motive regarding the incident, which occurred shortly after 3pm in central Amqui.

The Canadian Press reported a spokesperson for the regional health board as saying that a code orange had been issued at the local hospital due to the number of casualties involved.

Local media reported that the more seriously injured had been transferred to Quebec City for treatment.

Witnesses expressed that after the truck had struck several people on a sidewalk, the vehicle continued for another 400 to 500 metres, hitting more people along the way.

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau wrote on Twitter: “As we learn more about the tragic events that have taken place, I’m keeping everyone affected in my thoughts.”
