Travelling is fun but tedious involving queuing up, security checks and delays. But do the Royal Family have to deal with any of these troubles when they travel?

Royal Family members travel a lot through the country and even abroad on various royal engagements.

Of course, the royals don't have to deal with any of the long processes that the rest of us have to go through, however they do have their own set of protocols that they are expected to follow.

Here are six royal family travelling secrets and how the Cambridges often break one rule by travelling together.

Royals use commercial airlines

Much like everybody else, the royals have a budget that they stick to when it comes to air travel.

Yes, the budget is most likely much bigger than most of us can imagine, but it means that they should still use commercial airlines for their travel where possible.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are known to often skip chartered royal jets and travel first class on commercial flights instead, doing it the last time they travelled from Los Angeles to London.

British Airways is their go-to airline

Most of us have an airline preference for our holidays. For the royals, their go-to airline when flying commercial is British Airways.

In case there are no British Airways flights, the royals will fly on budget airlines, like Prince Harry and William did on their way back from cousin Zara Philip's wedding in 2011.

Royals have security even on commercial flights

Whether they fly private or commercial, the royals always fly with top-notch security.

They never make it obvious by travelling with a big entourage, but their team is made up of highly trained experts.

On their LA trip in 2011, Prince William and Kate took a seven-person security team with them, and had a 11-member team on their trip to Australia.

Monogrammed royal luggage

There's no doubt that the royals travel in style. For instance, Prince William has the letter W and a crown emblazoned on his luggage, while Kate carries a range of bags and suitcases.

The Cambridges also have a luggage tag system with a different colour label for each family member, including their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Royals don't wear comfy clothes while travelling

When we travel, most of us tend to choose comfortable clothing, but you'll never catch the royals in a pair of trackies or jeans while they travel.

Royal family members always dress smart, with women often wearing long dresses and heels and men arriving in suits or blazers and slacks.

Two heirs should not fly together

It is royal protocol that two heirs should never fly on the same flight together.

The reasoning behind this is making sure that the royal lineage is protected, in case of unexpected accidents such as flight crashes.

The Cambridges have defied the royal protocol of never having heirs travel together on the same flight.

Prince William first broke the rule in 2014 by flying together with George when he was just nine months old. They made the same decision to fly together as a family on their royal tour in 2016.

More recently, both William and Kate broke the rule again when all five members of the family, along with their dog, flew on the same royal helicopter.

Express Royal Correspondent Richard Palmer reported that "the Queen was very concerned about them all traveling together in a helicopter," as the Cambridges travelling together puts several members high up in the order of succession in the same flight.

Prince William is second in line for the throne, with his children George, Charlotte and Louis being third, fourth and fifth in line respectively.
