Three people have been rushed to hospital after a pile-up on a major road.

The A9 has been closed in both directions at Kilmuir, between Tain and Invergordon in Scotland.

Police Scotland confirmed three vehicles were involved in the collision.

The alarm was raised at around 2.09pm this afternoon and the road is still closed, the Daily Record reports.

Emergency services, including four fire appliances with hydraulic cutting gear, attended the scene.

Three people were injured and were taken to Raigmore Hospital, in Inverness.

But their condition is currently not known at this time.

Drivers were warned of lengthy delays and were advised to avoid the area.

They have been unable to access the north and southern routes of the A9 Dalmore – B9175 since the incident.

Police inquiries into the crash are ongoing.

A police spokesman said: "A three-car collision happened on the A9 near Kildary around 1.40pm this afternoon.

"Three people were taken to hospital and enquiries into the crash are continuing.

"The road should be re-opening shortly."

A traffic Scotland bulletin said: "The A9 at Kilmuir, between Tain and Invergordon, is currently closed in both directions due to a road traffic incident.

"Road users should allow for longer journey times and follow the local diversion in place."
