The campaigning group Arran published a video showing their protests against the tourism and spray painting the side of rental vehicles with their motto ‘neighbours vs tourists’. The group said: “With this action we want to point out a specific problem: the more than 100,000 tourist rental cars per year and, at the same time, denounce the entire tourist model that prevails in the ‘Catalan Countries’ and the island of Majorca.”

They blasted the City Council of Palma for failing to cope with the mass tourism the island receives.

The group tweeted: “More than 100,000 annual rental cars is unsustainable tourism saturation.”

They urged young people to go on the attack and called it “local self defence”.

Arran believe that mass tourism on the island creates issues such as the housing crisis and causes huge amounts of traffic.

A huge 2.3 million British tourists enjoy holidaying on the island and Brits account for more than a quarter of the total number of tourists.

In January last year, the controversial group even burned down a Spanish flag during Palma’s Mallorca Day celebrations.

Besides the graffiti, the group has also thrown buses with eggs and stormed restaurants with smoke bombs.

Last year the Socialist Party of Mallorca urged the local council to curb the number of cruises allowed.

Councillors argued that the party boats, which offer cheap alcohol, are an example of “bad tourist activity”.

Demonstrators also held signs in the airport to deter tourists of coming to the island.

They held signs saying “One Airline Every Minute is Not Sustainable!”

However, hotel owners defend the tourist activity claiming holiday makers bring “huge opportunity” to the island.

Majorca is a tourist hotspot for thousands across the globe, including thousands of British families who flock to the island.

The Federation of Barcelona Neighbourhood Associations (FAVB) has launched a campaign, which will ask tourists, once they return to their countries of origin, not to tell anyone that they have been to the Spanish city.

The people behind the campaign hope this could mean fewer people visit the city.

Authorities in Barcelona have announced plans to limit the number of cruises ships allowed to dock in the city to try and limit the number of tourists.

Bin men in Majorca have threatened to go on strike in a dispute over pay and conditions which is likely to add to the issue of tourists on the island.
