Police shoot man ‘wielding edged weapon’ at Narre Warren KFC
A man has been taken to hospital after he was shot by police who say he approached them while holding an edged weapon at a KFC in Melbourne’s south-east.
Police were called to the fast food outlet on the corner of Lauderdale Road and the Princes Highway in Narre Warren about 2.45pm after reports of people causing trouble.
When officers arrived, there was an “agitated man wielding an edged weapon who charged at them,” a spokesman said.
Police shot at the man and he received a non-life threatening injury to his lower body. He was taken to hospital.
Belinda told radio station 3AW she was passing the KFC, which is next to Narre Warren police station, when she heard a gunshot.
“It was a bit of a shock actually, as I was driving past there were a couple of police members in the car park and there was a guy there and they were spraying him, but he was still coming at them,” she said.
A police spokesman said an investigation into the incident was ongoing.
“As per standard protocol following a police shooting, detectives from the Armed Crime Squad will investigate the incident with oversight from Professional Standards Command.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
