Parliament is to be suspended

Parliament is suspended for five weeks and John Bercow has announced he will stand down as Commons speaker on 31 October at the latest.

A Swedish man’s application for a vanity license plate reading “TRUMP” has been denied.

Marcus Saaf told the Aftonbladet newspaper that he recently purchased a new American SUV (model unspecified) and “was drunk and thought it was fun to apply” for the custom registration, but was denied.

Swedish Transport agency rules explicitly prohibit political messages, along with other potentially “offensive” terms on license plates.

“In retrospect, I understand that it can be perceived as such. I will keep the registration plate I have,” Saaf said.

“Our customers have been asking for vegan cupcakes for a long time,” Baked by Melissa founder, Melissa Ben-Ishay, told the FOX Business Network’s “Varney & Co.”

Ben-Ishay, whose company ships its cupcakes throughout the country and has 14 locations in New York City,  explained the interest in vegan products was not limited to the New York and  the company has seen big growth during the last year, particularly online.

“We’re up over 40 percent on ecommerce, on our website,” Ben-Ishay said. “Our stores are up year-over-year also. We have an incredible product that makes people happy and the best gift ever.”

The 50-calorie handmade cupcakes, which can be shipped to all 50 states, retail for $10 for a six-pack or $168 for a 100-count order.

British lawmakers vote to demand government hand over Brexit documents

LONDON, Sept 9 (Reuters) – British lawmakers voted on Monday to demand the government publish documents relating to its planning for a no-deal Brexit and private communications from government officials involved in a decision to suspend parliament.

The 311 to 302 vote is binding on the government, but had been opposed by ministers who said there were concerns about the scope of the documents requested, and that they had been sufficiently transparent on the subject.

Bank stocks in broad rally as Treasury yields climb, with Bank of America’s stock up over 3%

Bank stocks enjoyed a broad rally Monday, supported by a jump in longer-term Treasury yields. The SPDR S&P Bank ETF KBE, +3.34% rose 3.0% and the SPDR Financial Select Sector ETF XLF, +1.66% advanced 1.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.08% rose 7 points, or less than 0.1%. Among the more active bank shares, Bank of America Corp. BAC, +3.62% gained 3.3%, Citigroup Inc. C, +4.35% rose 4.4%, Wells Fargo & Co. WFC, +2.66% advanced 2.5%, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM, +2.71% climbed 2.7%, KeyCorp KEY, +4.70% hiked up 4.1% and Regions Financial Corp. RF, +4.24% gained 4.1%. Meanwhile, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note TMUBMUSD10Y, +3.99% rose 6.1 basis points to 1.611%. A rise in longer-term yields can help boost bank profits, as it can widen the spread on what banks earn as they fund on longer-term assets, such as loans, with short-term liabilities.

Police investigating report of shots fired in Westphal

Nova Scotia RCMP are investigating a report of shots fired at a residence in Westphal, N.S., Sunday morning.

Police say they were called to the residence on Auburn Drive just before 6 a.m.

Officers arrived to find four people in the home at the time, but no one was injured.

The residence sustained minor damages, police say.

Police did not say whether charges have been laid.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Halifax District RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
