Meghan Markle still holds royal titles despite leaving the Firm over 2 years ago
The Royal Family recently came together for the historic Platinum Jubilee.
Celebrating 70 years that the Queen has been on the throne, it was the perfect opportunity for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to make a rare visit to the UK.
They brought little Archie and Lilibet with them, allowing the Queen to meet her great-granddaughter for the first time on little Lili's first birthday.
Following their heavily publicised exit from the Royal Family in 2020, they have retained their royal titles, despite no longer bearing the weight of responsibility they bring.
Now living in the US, the pair feel far removed from the day-to-day goings-on of the Royal Family.
However, there is simple reason they have kept their titles.
What are Meghan Markle’s royal titles?
Meghan and Harry are known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, or more casually, the Sussexes.
It is similar to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s titles of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
These titles are birth rights within the Royal Family and given out at birth or upon marriage.

As for Meghan, she inherited her title when she married Harry, with the Queen bestowing it on her shortly before their wedding ceremony.
Why does Meghan Markle still hold royal titles?
As the title was given to Meghan by the Queen on her wedding day, it is very unlikely it will ever be taken away.
To do so would require an act of Parliament, with a statute passed by the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
If Meghan and Harry were to ever divorce, it will still not mean she would lose her title.
An example is Sarah, Duchess of York, who retains the title years after divorcing Prince Andrew.
Will Meghan Markle have to give up her royal titles?
During their Oprah interview, Harry admitted his royal upbringing has “caused him so much pain”, leading many to wonder why the couple are still using their titles.
According to palace insiders speaking to the Mail in 2021, following Prince Philip’s death royal aides are keen for the pair to drop their titles.
The source said: "People are appalled that he could do this to the Queen when the Duke of Edinburgh is barely in his grave.
"To drag his grandfather into this is so shocking and disrespectful.”
They continued: "They should put the titles into abeyance, so they still exist, but are not used, like they agreed to do with their HRHs.
"They should just become Harry and Meghan. And if they refuse to do that, they have to explain why not."
Ultimately, unless Parliament votes on it, it would be a decision the couple have to make themselves.
