Man attends funeral of brother who died from snake bite – gets bitten and dies

A man has been killed by a snake bite after travelling to attend the funeral of his brother who also died after being bitten by a snake.

Police said that Govind Mishara, 22, had made a trip to Bhawanipur village, India, on Wednesday to attend his brother’s service.

Arvind Mishra, 38, was bitten and killed by a snake on Tuesday, Circle Officer Radha Raman Singh toldPTI.

He said: "Govind Mishara was killed after being bitten by a snake in his sleep. One of the relatives of the family, Chandrashekar Pandey, 22, who was in the same house, was also bitten by a snake".

"Mr Pandey was rushed to a hospital, where his condition remains critical.”

The two men had travelled from Ludhiana, around 50 miles away, to attend.

The local member of the Legislative Assembly, Kailash Nath Shukla, has since met with the bereaved family.

He has now asked officials in the area to make efforts to ensure such a tragedy doesn’t happen in the future.

A study released in 2020 found that around 1.2million people in India in the previous 20 years had been killed by snakebites.

A huge number of attacks end up claiming the life of the victims because they are so often miles away from medical facilities equipped to treat them.

The study was published in the open access journaleLifeusing data from theMillion Death Study.

Russell's vipers, kraits and cobras were responsible for a large percentage of the deaths. The Indian krait can grow as long as 1.75 meters.
