An enormous blaze has broken out in Bootle, Liverpool, sending huge plumes of black smoke billowing across the city.

Fire crews are battling the flames at a scrapyard on Regent Road, with five engines and an aerial appliance at the scene.

Both Derby Road and Regent Road have been closed to the public.

"There is a lot of smoke issuing form the fire so residents should keep windows closed and people are advised to avoid the area," Merseyside Fire has said.

Alarming footage taken at the scene at about 4pm on Saturday afternoon shows dark smoke erupting into the sky.

"There is a massive fire on the Liverpool docks. The sky in Bootle is black with smoke," one Twitter user said.

"No idea what is burning, looks like scrap yard," said another.

Around 100 tonnes of waste metal product is currently up in flames at the scrapyard, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Photos at the yard show smoke pouring from a large pile of scrap.

A police cordon has been put in place.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Firefighters are currently in attendance at a fire at a scrapyard on Regent Road, Kirkdale.

"Crews were alerted at 3.35pm and on scene at 3.41pm. Five fire engines and an aerial appliance are currently in attendance.

"On arrival crews found a large fire involving approx 100 tonnes of product.

"The incident has been sectorised. Crews are using a main jet, two ground monitors and water from the aerial appliance to tackle the fire.

"There is a large quantity of smoke in the area and nearby residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed. Anyone with existing medical conditions should keep medicines nearby and call NHS 111 if ill effects occur.

"The incident is ongoing."
