Kate will get new name when she’s queen – as public want William on throne next
Kate Middleton will be known by a new name when Prince William takes the throne and she becomes queen.
The 39-year-old, born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, was given the titles of the Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn and Baroness Carrickfergu following her wedding 10 years ago to William on April 29 in 2011.
And upon William's ascent to the throne, she will be known as Queen Catherine, making her the nation’s sixth Queen Catherine.
Kate will likely be crowned "in a similar but simpler ceremony… unless decided otherwise," the Royal Family website states.
The duchess's title will also change when father-in-law Prince Charles is crowned king.
William, who would then be next in line to the throne, will become the Prince of Wales.
Kate will automatically become Princess of Wales.
And while technically the title should have been passed to Prince Charles' wife Camilla upon their marriage, she turned it down out of respect to Princess Diana and is instead known as the Duchess of Cornwall.
"Camilla was not popular or well liked, [although] this has changed a lot since the marriage as Camilla has taken on a lot of patronages and Charles is a lot happier," royal author Marlene Koenig previously told Town & Country.
"Still, [there was] a lot of tension and anger among a certain element of the population, so it was decided that Camilla would be styled as the Duchess of Cornwall, even though, of course, she is the Princess of Wales."
Koenig also said the Duchess of Cambridge's title could become the Queen Mother later in life, should she outlive her husband.
"When [Prince] George is King, she can choose to be styled as HM Queen Catherine, the Queen Mother."
Meanwhile, the public wants William to be the next king when the Queen’s reign ends, according to a poll revealed by Daily Mirror this week.
The Duke of Cambridge has a 20-point lead – 47% to 27% – over his father Prince Charles in a huge blow to the heir’s popularity despite great strides to improve his public image over the past two decades.

Kate Middleton 'tried to play peacemaker' between Prince Harry and William
But younger respondents aged 18 to 24 years old want Prince Harry as king over his dad and brother.
Pollsters Deltapoll interviewed 1,590 adults between March 31 and April 1.
The Mirror's Royal Editor Russell Myers said: "Riding a wave of good publicity after his efforts during the coronavirus crisis, it comes as no surprise that Brits have backed William to be King.
"One day he will take the throne and no doubt be shaped by the experiences he is gaining each year, stepping up on the world stage and assisting The Firm when called upon.
"But many would do well to recognise the enormous contribution to society, not just at home but all over the world, made by the Prince of Wales.
"Millennials back Wills and Harry’s environmental credentials, but perhaps they aren’t aware that Charles was doing just that before they were a twinkle in their parents’ eye – recently celebrating 50 years of campaigning for a better world."
