Kate Middleton unveils new portrait of Prince George ahead of his ninth birthday

To celebrate Prince George's ninth birthday his adoring mother Kate Middleton has shared another photograph of the beaming future King.

Dressed in a light blue Polo shirt, the little Prince was all smiles as he posed for mum and photographer Kate on a sandy beach in the UK.

George will turn nine tomorrow (July 22), but it has become the Cambridges tradition to release the photo a day before the event.

The Cambridges release photos of their children, George, 8, Charlotte, 7, and Louis, 4, taken by Kate to mark each of their birthdays every year.

However, in a sign that they're preparing him for the media spotlight, George has been photographed many times over the last year at both the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and major sporting events.

At the Wimbledon final at the beginning of July, the future King delighted the crowd in his smart suit.

It's known George is a massive sports fan, and he's often seen watching major football matches with his father, such as when they attended the Euro 2020 final in 2021, when Italy beat England to the title.

The young royal will reportedly start at Lambrook School in Ascot near Windsor Castle later this year with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge rumoured to be planning a move to Berkshire.

To celebrate George's big day, it's thought his godmother, Julia Samuel will stick to a sweet tradition she learnt from Princess Diana.

Each year, she buys George an ‘impossible’ gift, one that William will then spend the next few days painstakingly assembling.

She said: "I do to George what [Diana] did to us, which is give impossible toys that are really noisy and take a lot of making.

"William then has to spend days putting together. And then put all the machinery together, and it makes awful tooting noises and lights flashing and all of that."

Julia added that it "makes [her] laugh, and it makes George laugh," knowing that William has to spend so long making these presents.

This is a tradition she extends to all the children in the Royal Family she buys presents for.

George was born in the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London at 4.24pm on July 22 in 2013, weighing 8lb 6oz.

He made his public debut in front of the world’s media on the hospital steps a day later, wrapped in a white merino wool shawl, cradled in his mother’s arms.
