Hurricane Humberto currently has maximum sustained wind speeds of 100mph, however some strengthening is forecast during the next 36 hours. According to the NHC “Humberto could become a major hurricane late tonight or Wednesday morning”. Here is the latest information from the National Hurricane Center’s 11am (EDT) public advisory.

Hurricane Humberto is currently tracking about 525 miles west of Bermuda.

With this advisory, the Bermuda Weather Service has now issued a Hurricane Watch for Bermuda.

A tropical storm warning also remains in effect for Bermuda.

In their 11am (EDT) public advisory, the NHC said: “At 1100 AM EDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Humberto was located by an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft near latitude 30.7 North, longitude 73.5 West.

“Humberto is moving toward the east-northeast near 8 mph (13 km/h), and this general motion with a gradual increase in forward speed is expected through early Thursday.

“On the forecast track, the center of Humberto is expected to pass just to the north of Bermuda Wednesday night.”

The latest advisory warns of a number of hazards affecting land.

Tropical Storm conditions are “likely” over Bermuda by Wednesday afternoon and continuing into Thursday morning, while hurricane conditions are also possible over Bermuda Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Starting on Tuesday, Bermuda may also be hit with periods of heavy rain, with rainfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches predicted.

Large swells will increase along the Bermuda coast by Wednesday, with dangerous breaking waves, “especially along south-facing beaches” possible on Wednesday night into Thursday – with a risk of coastal flooding.

As for the northwestern Bahamas and the southeastern coast of the US (from east-central Florida to North Carolina), swells will continue to affect these areas over the next couple of days.

The NHC advises people consult products from their local weather office and the Bermuda Weather Service.

According to Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist, Humberto’s impact on the Bahamas and the US will be “miniscule” in comparison to the previous Hurricane Dorian.

He adds: “AccuWeather meteorologists expect Humberto to take a curved path to the northeast through midweek, which will keep the center well off the Southeast coast.”
