Donald Trump demands Covid ‘lab leak’ answers
Ex-President Donald Trump has demanded China pays ten trillion dollars because of its role in starting the coronavirus pandemic.
It comes following reports the deadly virus spread across the globe after it leaked out of a lab in Wuhan.
Trump said: “Now everyone, even the so-called 'enemy', are beginning to say that President Trump was right about the China Virus coming from the Wuhan Lab.
“China should pay ten trillion dollars to America, and the world, for the death and destruction they have caused.”
The billionaire businessman also hit out at chief medical officer Dr. Fauci over his communications with China, reports the Daily Mail.
Trump is calling on the scientific advisor to reveal exactly how much he knew about work being done at the Wuhan Institute of virology.
Emails to Dr. Fauci show he was warned the virus could have originated from a lab – at the same time he told the public it occurred naturally from animals and denied reports the disease was man-made.
The doc was also thanked for his public support in April by the head of a research group which works with the Wuhan lab, Freedom of Information requests from Buzzfeed News and the Washington Post show.
Trump didn't hesitate to up the pressure on Dr. Fauci and said in a statement: “There are a lot of questions that must be answered.
“The funding of Wuhan by the U.S. was foolishly started by the Obama administration in 2014 but ended under the Trump administration.
“When I heard about it, I said ‘no way’. What did Dr. Fauci know about research, and when did he know it?”
But the medical expert defended himself and said the exposed emails had been taken out of context.
He told CNN: “I still believe the most likely origin is from an animal species to a human, but I keep an absolutely open mind that if there may be other origins.”
Uncertainty around the virus has sparked a range of theories about its origins and high-profile scientists have admitted they can’t be sure where it started.
Current US president Joe Biden says he “redoubling” efforts to find out where the disease is really from.
