Doctor rebuilds man’s entire hand after it was completely mangled in crusher

A doctor has sewn a man's hand back into one piece after it was completely mangled in a crushing machine.

The man was rushed to hospital after the horrific injuries which left his thumb, little finger, the tip of his index finger and a large chunk of his palm ripped off.

He was reportedly operating a huge press which is used to condense plastic waste in to a cube in Samut Prakan, central Thailand, when the accident occurred.

Doctors managed to piece the patient's hand back together in a 13-hour-long operation which involved the re-attachment of bone, ligaments, blood vessels and nerves.

Doctors were unable to reattach the tip of his index finger due to an embolism.

Dr Wichit Siritattamrong, an orthopedic hand and reconstructive microvascular surgeon, revealed details of the surgery, which happened around three years ago, as he discussed some of his career highlights on Thursday.

He said the patient initially was not happy with the result and asked him: "Why didn't you attach my index finger?"

Dr Siritattamrong continued: "It upset me a little bit when the patient asked me about his index finger.

"Then I showed him the picture of his hand before the surgery and he realised how lucky he is to be able to use his hand again. After that he was grateful to all the team who had just saved him from being handicapped."

The miracle surgery has meant the man has been able to use his hand and has had no complications since.
