A British doctor is claiming he owns Mars because he fires a big laser at the planet from his back garden – to stop Russia creating a ‘Star Wars’ army base.

Dr Phil Davies, 55, spends his evenings pointing a lightsaber at the red planet in a unique quest for planetary ownership.

He says that, due to current space laws, he can stake a claim to being the rightful owner of the martian territory.

UN regulations state that to own part of a planet you have to show you have made it ready for ‘sustained use’.

Dr Phil says that, with his special laser, he is creating an atmosphere on Mars, making it more habitable – and proving he can claim to own it.

His quest for planetary ownership is to save space for everyone – rather than see it fall into the hands of Russia or the USA in the future.

The former RAF medical officer fears superpowers could easily snatch the extraterrestrial wasteland and create a ‘Star Wars’ like army base.

The doc’s lightsaber is 5,000 milliwatts – 10,000 stronger than the trivial laser pointers that kids use to irritate teachers.

The laser travels 86.277 million km to Mars and takes between three and four minutes to get there when the planet is at its closest.

Dr Davies, 55, from Farnham, Surrey, is taking his fight through the High Court, The Court of Appeal and the European Court Of Human Rights.

He said: "This the only legitimate method to successfully claim land on Mars.

"This isn't like these light-hearted 'own a star' presents people give each other for Christmas.

"Space law is being eroded and it shouldn't be. I'm not a tree hugger, I want counties to mine space but do it responsibly.

"The most exciting point for the public is the fact that I now have a technically correct claim to Mars that is filed with the UN."

Dr Davies says he has so far signed up 151,000 people from all 195 recognised nations to back his plan.

He has divided the planet up and all his backers technically own 22 square km of Mars each.

He says the more people involved in the scheme it legitimizes the plan further and would stop Mars falling into the wrong hands.

But Dr Davies ensured: "There's plenty more available".

He added: "I don't really mind why people join us – whether they truly agree with our goal or whether they just think it's a romantic hope to give their descendants an amazing bit of Martian land.'"

He is trying take his claim to the UN but to do he needs backing from a nation and is trying to force the British authorities to help him.

He has so far been unsuccessful – but has is taking the fight to the High Court, The Court of Appeal and European Court Of Human Rights.

Dr Davies said: "Our journey through the UK Courts has shown that the judges and UK government all admit that our claim might just hold up in international law, they just wriggled out of any obligation to help us get there.

"That does mean that in the future, maybe 100-150 years from now, when it's feasible/permitted to go to Mars and buy/develop land, our claim will be first in line to be dealt with.”

"So, the great great great grandchildren of those people who join us now can honestly expect to either get a big chunk of land on Mars or a massive pay off from big mining corporations and governments. That's now a fact."
