Boy, 13, charged with murder after man found dead in church garden

A 13-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a man was found dead outside a church.

Steven McMyler, from Wigan, was found dead in the gardens of Wigan Parish Church, Greater Manchester, last Thursday.

Greater Manchester Police believed the 34-year-old died following an earlier "altercation" at the scene.

Detectives have made a number of arrests and a 19-year-old man has already appeared in court charged with murder.

Jordan Short, of Kirby in Merseyside, appeared in court on Thursday.

And today a 13-year-old boy from Whiston in Merseyside will appear at Manchester Magistrates Court, Manchester Evening News reports.

The suspect, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with murder.

Cops said three men – aged 30, 19 and 18 – who were previously arrested on suspicion of murder have been released under investigation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday police said: "Shortly before 7.50pm on Thursday, August 6, police were called by the ambulance service to reports of concern for a man outside the church on Bishopgate, Wigan.

"Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Steven James McMyler sadly died at the scene."

Mr McMyler's family said he was a much-loved person who lit up a room.

They said: "Steven was an extremely likeable lad, and everyone who came across him loved him as much as we all did.

"He was a popular lad, and he lit the room up as soon as he walked in.

"Everybody thought the world of him, as he had a heart of gold.

"We can't believe what has happened, and we are struggling to come to terms with this terrible tragedy."

Enquiries continue as police continue to urge witnesses to come forward.
