Angela Merkel’s team say what caused her shaking – and it wasn’t dehydration
Mrs Merkel, 64, was seen shaking at a ceremony in Berlin on Thursday. The German Chancellor crossed her arms as she tried to prevent the tremors. And the previous week, her whole body moved uncomfortably as she stood in the sun alongside Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky to watch a military display in Germany’s capital.
Speaking after the second attack, Mrs Merkel’s team said it was caused by her fear of repeating the first episode of tremors.
They told German newspaper Stuttgarter Zeitung: “There is nothing to worry about. The memory of the incident last week led to the situation today. It’s a psychological process.”
It comes after she blamed the first public shaking bout on dehydration.
She said shortly afterwards: “Since then I’ve drunk at least three glasses of water, which I apparently needed, and now I’m doing very well.”
Mrs Merkel went on to attend the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, this week following the second incident.
In response to the tremors she has been suffering, the German leader said: “I’m convinced, just as this reaction occurred it will go away again.”
But she dodged a question on whether she had consulted a doctor.
German tabloid Bild claimed yesterday that a leading western intelligence service believed Mrs Merkel was suffering from a “neurological problem”.
Directly after the G20 Mrs Merkel jetting off from Osaka, Japan, back to Europe, before heading to the EU Summit today in Brussels.
The German Chancellor is now in her fourth term after taking on the role in 2005.
Last year, she quit as leader of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party due to disappointing election results.
She is stepping down as chancellor when her current term ends in 2021.
