‘Double standards’ – Express readers react to Sue Gray’s future Labour role
Starmer accuses government of resurrecting 'a story about Sue Gray'
Sue Gray has reportedly been cleared to become Sir Keir Starmer’s chief of staff as soon as autumn this year – sparking a mix of backlash and support from Express.co.uk readers.
The former second permanent secretary to the Cabinet Office led a report into partygate last year which exposed Boris Johnson’s role in lockdown gatherings in Downing Street, an investigation which many believe contributed to the former prime minister’s downfall.
Mr Johnson announced his resignation on July 7, 2022, just months following the release of the report, in which Ms Gray described “failures of leadership and judgment in No 10 and the Cabinet Office” over the gatherings.
Commenting on reports that Ms Gray is set to take up a role with Labour later this year, one Express reader writing under the username fredegar said: “The public demonstrated support for Keir Starmer by electing an extra six hundred councillors and now with Sue Gray helping out Labour will be unstoppable.”
Another named thisisit added: “There seems to be a lot of ‘fury’ from Tory MPs about what Labour are doing, but very little action from Tory MPs regarding the Government addressing things people care about like the cost of living crisis and NHS waiting times.”
However, others hit out at Ms Gray reportedly being able to join Labour’s top team within six months. User byebyebrussels wrote: “The disgusting cronyism and double standards of the left never fail to disappoint.”
Billybosworth added: “This is disgraceful. The name should be changed to the Non Ethcal Party.”
Ms Gray’s exit from the civil service has been under review by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba), which – according to The Times – has recommended Ms Gray should take six months’ gardening leave before taking up her new role.
With the next general election due to take place no later than January 2025, Ms Gray’s move to the Opposition could play a key part in defeating Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives and helping Mr Starmer into Downing Street.
