After a hard-fought battle with cancer, “Ranking Roger” Charlery, the vocalist of The English Beat and General Public, passed away in his home at the age of 56 earlier this week.

“He fought & fought & fought, Roger was a fighter,” read an official statement by The Beat, announcing that the singer was surrounded by friends when he died.

“Roger’s family would like to thank everyone for their constant support during this tough time,” the post continued, adding that there would be “More to follow in the coming days.”

The singer, who announced his official diagnosis with cancer of the brain and lungs last year, managed to finish his autobiography, I Just Can’t Stop It, alongside co-writer, Daniel Rachel despite “health challenges.”

Published by Omnibus, the book will be available for purchase later this year.
