Roland Garros account deletes tweet alluding to Naomi Osaka not doing press at French Open

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka announced Wednesday that she will not participate in press conferences or media during this year's French Open to protect her mental health.

In a social media post, the world's No. 2 ranked player said that her decision is "nothing personal to the tournament," but a way to bring attention to athletes being subjected to questioning that ignores their mental health.

In a now-deleted tweet, the official Twitter account of Roland Garros — where the tournament is being held — posted a photo of other athletes participating in their media responsibilities on Saturday with the caption "They understood the assignment."

Naomi Osaka will not be speaking to media at the French Open.

Osaka is expected to be fined over $140,000 for not participating in press conferences but wrote that she hopes the money will go to a mental health charity.

Foster Friess, Prominent GOP Donor, Dies At 81

Wealthy Republican donor Foster Friess died Thursday at the age of 81.

Friess, who identified as a born-again Christian, was a philanthropist and the founder of mutual fund manager Friess Associates.

A Wyoming resident, Freiss was a major donor backing Rick Santorum’s 2012 presidential campaign. At the time, he gave more than $2 million to the Red, White and Blue Fund, a super PAC supporting the former Pennsylvania senator in the Republican presidential primary.

During the Santorum campaign, Friess sparked outrage by joking about contraception, saying that “back in my days … gals put [Bayer aspirin] between their knees” to prevent pregnancy.

Friess was a supporter of former President Donald Trump.

In 2016, after Trump suggested a Muslim judge would be biased, Foster echoed the Islamophobic sentiment, telling CNBC that Muslim people “have a different kind of worldview” and “would prefer to have the Quran be the dominant guiding force for our country.”

Milwaukee Bucks sweep Miami Heat to advance in NBA playoffs; Giannis Antetokounmpo posts triple-double

MIAMI – All gas, no brake.

Depending what social circles you travel in, sports you follow or Internet wormholes you travel down it’s a phrase that’s been in the lexicon for years. Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur popularized it in Wisconsin in 2019 with an emphatic expletive worked in for flavor. Though no member of the Milwaukee Bucks quoted it verbatim over the last week against the Miami Heat, a version of it has been espoused in team huddles by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton.

The Bucks may have won Games 2 and 3 by an average of 31.5 points, but their two veteran stars were constantly reminding the team to not take the foot off the gas, to not let the Heat get comfortable – or let a raucous holiday-weekend crowd at American Airlines Arena truly get into the games.

But just because they’re on the South Beach doesn’t mean the gas was being pushed into a Maserati.

BoB posts loss in Q4 as it shifts to new tax regime

Lender’s FY21 net profit surges 52%

Bank of Baroda (BoB) reported a standalone net loss of ₹1,046.5 crore for the quarter ended March 31.

The bank had posted a net profit of ₹506.6 crore in the year-earlier period. For the fiscal year 2020-21, the bank reported a 52% rise in net profit to ₹829 crore.

“The bank moved to a new tax structure thus reporting a loss of ₹1,047 crore because of DTA (deferred tax asset) reversal.

“Excluding the impact of the change in the tax regime, the bank would have reported a profit after tax of ₹2,267 crore in Q4FY21 and ₹4,143 crore in FY21,” it said in a release.

Standalone income in the quarter under review was almost ₹21,532.9 crore compared with the year-earlier period.

During the fiscal year, income fell to ₹82,859.5 crore from ₹86,301 crore in 2019-20, the bank said.

Moderna Scientists And Execs Warn That New Viral Variants Of Covid-19 Coming

New viral variants of the Covid-19 coronavirus are on the way, claimed Moderna scientists and executives in a Thursday virtual investor event, as reported by Barrons.

“As the virus spreads, it is rapidly mutating,” the company’s chief scientific officer, Melissa Moore, said on the call. “Some of these new viral strains appear to be even more transmissible than the original strain… We already know that some of these new strains are less susceptible to neutralization by our current vaccine.”

The company is constantly testing its vaccine against the new variants, she said. But that complex work lags their emergence.

“The shortest time from the detection of a variant of concern to preclinical immunogenicity readout against a panel of pseudoviruses is approximately 2 to 3 months,” said Guillaume Stewat-Jones, a Moderna scientist who works as associate director of antigen design and selection on their infectious disease team. “And new viral variants are coming — emerging constantly in real time.”

While it’s generally acknowledged that most variants will not morph into something more fatal than the current virus, there are no guarantees.
