Retail Sales Have Largely Recovered From The Pandemic
Retail sales have largely recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic as the holiday season nears. However, the sudden spike in coronavirus cases threatens to affect retailers again.
“Strong growth in retail sales during the last few months points to the resiliency of consumers even in this disruptive pandemic environment,” said National Retail Federation Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz. “Taking in all the evidence available, the U.S. economic recovery has progressed more quickly than generally expected.”
According to retail sales report released by U.S. Department of Commerce, monthly retail sales hit $549.3 billion, up 1.9 percent in September, the biggest spike in three months, and the fifth month of increases.
Household spending on retail goods has helped bring back overall consumer spending, which was down 16.1 percent year-over-year in April but only 1.9 percent as of August, according to the Commerce Department.
Kleinhenz agreed with Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s recent call for additional federal stimulus.
“While there might be sufficient momentum and resiliency to propel the economy in the months ahead, additional fiscal policy support is critical to ensure that the recovery doesn’t stall,” Kleinhenz said.
South Korea military searches armed border area after detecting unidentified person
SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korea’s military said on Wednesday it was conducting an operation near the heavily fortified border with North Korea after detecting an unidentified person.
The operation was underway around the Demilitarised Zone dividing the two Koreas on the eastern region, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

The Senate delegation from Georgia, along with the state's legislature and governor, is firmly Republican. Georgia's delegation in the House is split: eight Republicans and four Democratic members. Georgia has 16 electoral votes and is expected by analysts to be particularly competitive.

Biden visits son Beau's grave, attends church on Election Day

Former Vice President Joe Biden attended church and visited late son Beau's grave on Election Day — but had a bit of a slip-up when introducing his granddaughters to a crowd.
Biden and his wife, Jill, made the visit in Wilmington, Del., with Beau's daughter Natalie and his other son Hunter's daughter Finnegan. Beau Biden, who died of brain cancer in 2015, was buried at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church in Delaware.
The Democratic nominee also appeared in Philadelphia, Pa., where he made an awkward introduction for one of his granddaughters.
“This is my son, Beau Biden, who a lot of you helped elect to the Senate in Delaware, this is my granddaughter Natalie — no wait, I’ve got the wrong one. This is Natalie, this is Beau’s daughter,” he said.
Biden is in Delaware spending election night with his family.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse looks to defend his US Senate seat against Democratic challenger Chris Janicek.
Sasse is in his sixth year as a member of the Senate and was first elected in 2014 after defeating Democrat Dave Domina by 32.9 percentage points. Prior to serving in Congress, Sasse served as the president of Midland University for five years.
In the 2016 presidential election, the state of Nebraska voted for President Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton by 25 points.
The contest is "safe" Republican, according to Sabato's Crystal Ball with the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
