The number of animals living in the world’s forests has more than halved in the last 50 years, the conservation charity WWF has revealed.

Forest wildlife’s activities is vital for maintaining healthy woodlands and jungles which help curb climate change.

But a global assessment by WWF and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) of 455 populations of 268 species that live only in forests reveals they declined by 53pc on average since 1970.

The biggest threat is loss and damage to habitat, mostly caused by humans clearing land, unsustainable logging, shifting agriculture and wildfires.
