Zara Tindall’s royal baby could meet Princess Anne before Queen in break with protocol

Zara Tindall: Expert discusses ‘cute’ Twitter post from Mike

Zara Tindall, 39, and her husband Mike shared their royal baby news ahead of Christmas. The couple who have two young daughters – Lena, two, and Mia, six – are understood to be five months pregnant and will welcome a new addition to their family later this year.

Unlike her cousins Prince William, 38, and Prince Harry, 36, Zara was raised outside the royal bubble after her mother Princess Anne, 70, rejected royal titles for both her children.

As a non-working member of the monarchy, Zara is less bound by protocol than senior royals and could mark her baby’s arrival in a non-traditional way.

Royal custom dictates that Queen Elizabeth II, 94, is the first Royal Family member to be informed following the birth of a new royal baby.

However, Zara could shirk this tradition and tell her mother Princess Anne instead.

Zara and Anne live nearby as Zara has a home on her mother’s Gatcombe Park Estate and it seems plausible Anne could be nearby at the time of her new grandchild’s birth.

Zara’s brother Peter also lives at Gatcombe with his two daughters Isla, eight, and Savannah, 10, and given their proximity, could also mean they meet Zara and Mike’s new baby before the Queen.

The Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically changed how the Royal Family communicates and has prevented the Windsor Family from meeting up en masse for months.

The Queen and Prince Philip, 99, have been based at Windsor Castle for the most part of the pandemic and are expected to remain there for the foreseeable future.

Depending on how the pandemic develops ahead of spring there are hopes that the Queen’s official birthday parade Trooping the Colour could go ahead this June.

While the Queen quit Buckingham Palace ahead of the first lockdown last March, it is understood she may return to London to officially mark her birthday.

The Duke of Edinburgh is due to turn 100 on June 10 and if Zara has given birthday by then, her grandfather’s birthday could be the perfect opportunity to introduce her new baby to the rest of the family.

While Philip is famously not one to make a fuss, his 100th birthday is expected to be marked by some form of nationwide celebration.

Trooping the Colour is due to go ahead on June 12 this year and whether or not Zara attends with her family remains to be seen.

Will Zara’s royal baby have a title?

Given that Zara herself was raised without a royal title and neither Lena nor Mia have one it seems highly unlikely her third child will.

Zara is currently 18th place in the line of succession and her daughters Mia are in 19th and 20th place.

Zara, Mia and Lena will all shift down a spot in line to the throne following the birth of Princess Eugenie’s first child who will be 11th in line.

Zara and her children’s low standing in the line of succession means her new royal baby is highly unlikely to ever be a senior member of the monarchy.

Zara has previously praised her mother’s decision not to give her or Peter and HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) style or title and is likely to follow in Princess Anne’s footsteps.

In 2015, Zara told the Times: “I’m very lucky that both my parents decided to not use the title and we grew up and did all the things that gave us the opportunity to do.”
