Zara Tindall is the Queen’s eldest granddaughter and second child of Anne, Princess Royal and her first husband, Mark Phillips. Despite arriving before Princes William and Harry, she never had any claim to the throne and wasn’t eligible to take a title her fellow royals took.

Why is Zara Tindall not a princess?

Zara Tindall was born to Princess Anne and Mark Phillips in 1981.

The royal was the Queen’s second grandchild following her brother, Peter Phillips, but neither took a title on birth.

Sadly, they were not privy to the same treatment as some of their fellow family members because of Anne’s gender.

The Queen has four children, Princes Charles, Andrew and Edward, and Princess Anne.

Archaic royal protocols dictate each male child of the monarch can pass their title down to their children.

Female children, on the other hand, have no such honour.

As such, neither Peter Phillips nor Zara Tindall had a title on birth, but it didn’t exempt them from one altogether.

Queen Elizabeth offered Princess Anne the opportunity to title both of her children, but the Princess Royal and her husband declined.

Their influence rubbed off on Peter Phillips, who declined the offer of an earldom from the Queen when he married Autumn Phillips in 2008.

Zara said she is equally thankful to live without a title.

She told The Times in 2015: “I’m very lucky that both my parents decided to not use the title and we grew up and did all the things that gave us the opportunity to do.”

While Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice also lead less royal lives much like Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips, they have titles.

They owe their titles to Prince Andrew who, as a man, could pass on his honours.

The only other grandchildren of the Queen not to hold the prince or princess title are Prince Edward’s children Lady Lucy Louise Windsor and her brother James, Viscount Severn.

When Lady Louise was born in 2003, the Earl and Countess of Wessex decided against giving their children a title.

The Queen sanctioned the move, which meant they took the titles as children of an Earl.

King George V, the Queen’s grandfather, limited the monarchy’s titles in 1917.

His letters patent was one of the first-ever to limit royal titles in the male line and limited the size of the Royal Family.

Only the children of the sovereign, sons of sons of the sovereign and the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales can take on the HRH, prince or princess titles.
