Zara Tindall title: The real reason Zara Tindall is NOT a princess
Popular royal Zara Tindall, 38, is adored for her level-headed attitude. The fun-loving royal and mother-of-two is Princess Anne’s youngest child. She could have been a Princess – but the title was not bestowed on the royal, deemed one of the Queen’s favourite grandchildren. So what is Zara Tindall’s title – and does she even have one?
Queen Elizabeth II’s second child Princess Anne, 69, is said to share her father Prince Philip’s pragmatic approach to things.
Like the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Anne was outdoorsy, courageous and gifted at sports as a child.
A talented equestrian, Princess Anne competed in the 1976 Olympics and her daughter Zara has followed in her footsteps.
Anne wished to raise her children Peter and Zara outside of the royal bubble to give them as normal an upbringing as possible.
Before Anne’s children were born only grandchildren fathered by the Queen’s sons were permitted to have royal titles.
However, the Queen changed this rule so that Anne’s children could have titles too.
But despite her mother’s efforts to equalise things, Anne rejected the Queen’s offer of titles for her children choosing to raise them as private citizens instead.
So Zara and Peter were never Prince and Princess but simply went as Zara and Peter Phillips – they took their father Mark Phillips’ surname.
Mark Phillips, who was a commoner, also turned down a royal title following his marriage to Princess Anne.
Some royal fans may think Zara and Peter missed out – after all their cousins were Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice.
However, Zara, who married former rugby star Mike Tindall in 2011 has praised her mother’s decision.
In 2015 she told the Times: “I’m very lucky that both my parents decided to not use the title and we grew up and did all the things that gave us the opportunity to do.”
Olympic silver medallist Zara who hopes to compete again for Britain’s equestrian team in the 2020 Japan Olympics, credits her parents for her hard work ethic.
She said: “I probably get it from my parents. Papa said to me, ‘If you want to get to the top you’ve got to do it properly, and if you want to stay at the top it’s even harder.’ ”
Zara was dubbed a royal rebel as a teenager when she famously bent the rules by getting a tongue piercing.
In a recent interview, she revealed she “wouldn’t have a leg to stand on” if her daughters ever wanted to get tattoos.
Zara told Saga magazine, first referring to her husband Mike: “He absolutely hasn’t got a tattoo.
“I’d also rather one of my daughters came home with a piercing than a tattoo because at least a stud can be removed.”
Zara went on to acknowledge that her teenage tongue piercing would make it tough to take a stand against her girls if they did decide to get inked.
She added: “I wouldn’t have a leg to stand on if they did though.”
