Prince Philip was hoping to meet Zara Tindall’s newest child before he passed away, according to talkRADIO royal correspondent Rupert Bell. Speaking to Mike Graham on talkRADIO, Mr Bell revealed that the Duke of Edinburgh had seen the baby virtually and was hoping to meet the child in person. In late March, Zara and Mike Tindall announced the birth of a son, who they named Lucas Philip Tindall.

The baby’s middle name was in honour of both Mr Tindall’s father as well as Mrs Tindall’s grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh

Palace officials confirmed that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were “delighted” at the news.

They were both “looking forward to meeting their 10th great-grandchild when circumstances allow”, according to a Buckingham Palace spokesman.

Sadly, Philip died last Friday without getting to meet the child, who is 22nd in line to the throne.

Mr Bell said the last year had “probably been quite lonely for them in their bubble at Windsor”.

He continued: “You have seen the pictures, Philip loved having his great-grandchildren around.

“There are some really lovely pictures of them together.

“He was very excited that Zara Tindall had another child.

“And I know that he was getting in touch with her and seeing the baby from where he was, even though he had just come out of hospital.

“Sadly, he was never going to be able to meet their latest child in person. He did care so much.”

This comes as the Royal Family prepare to celebrate Prince Philip at his funeral later today.

Prince Philip’s funeral will be attended by a small group of just 30 people, including heirs Prince Charles and Prince William.

Prince Harry will also be in attendance, joining the family for the first time in over a year, although the Duchess of Sussex is remaining in California following medical advice.

Members of the public are being urged to stay away due to coronavirus restrictions though the service will be broadcast live by the BBC, ITV and Sky News.

A national minute’s silence will be held at 3pm to commemorate the Duke of Edinburgh’s life.
