Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips: How Zara’s big brother was protective of her growing up

Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest daughter Princess Anne chose to raise her two children outside of the royal bubble. She rejected the Queen’s offer of titles for Peter and Zara and brought them up as private citizens instead. While Zara and Peter knew their grandmother was the Queen growing up, the siblings were no different to most brothers and sisters.

Zara Tindall, 38, followed in her mother’s footsteps to become an Olympic equestrian, winning silver at the London 2012 Games.

She married former England rugby star Mike Tindall in 2011 and the popular royal couple now have two young daughters of their own.

Their eldest daughter Mia, five, was born in 2014 and their youngest Lena, one, arrived in 2018.

In 2016, the Tindalls suffered a tragedy when Zara had a miscarriage.

Zara has since spoken out about the heartbreaking experience and how her family rallied around her at the time.

After Zara opened up about what she had gone through her big brother Peter, 41, said he had felt protective towards her at the time.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain in 2018, Peter said: “Of course you want to be protective of her, it’s a testament to us as a family that she did manage to go through the second miscarriage without the world knowing.”

Peter has previously described how he and Zara were pretty normal siblings growing up.

In 2018 he told The Times: “Most little sisters are annoying and Zara was no exception.

“She tried to boss me around and tell me what to do.

“Wild is probably an unfair attribute to attach to her, but she was certainly at the centre of anything that was happening that was fun and boisterous.”

According to Zara, Peter could be protective of her when it came to dating and was initially wary when she first started seeing Mike.

Zara told The Times: “I met Mike in 2003.

“In the beginning of our relationship, Pete was very watchful of how Mike treated me. He wanted the best for me.”

“Did I ever hook up with any of his friends?

“No way. It was the complete opposite: ‘Don’t go near my sister.’”

Peter is believed to have joined Zara and Mike in Japan to watch the Rugby World Cup final earlier this month.

The siblings still remain close while making to keep a lower profile that their more senior royal cousins.

Zara has previously praised her mother’s decision to raise her and Peter without royal titles.

In 2015 Zara told the Times: “I’m very lucky that both my parents decided not to use the title and we grew up and did all the things that gave us the opportunity to do.”
