A YOUNG Dublin man has been accused of producing weapons including hatchets and a hammer in a violent melee in the city centre.

Ahmed Majeed (25) was arrested by gardai investigating a disturbance involving up to 30 people outside a music venue off Grafton Street earlier this month.

He was granted bail on condition he stays out of the Dublin 2 area after he appeared in Dublin District Court charged in connection with the fracas.

Mr Majeed is charged with producing weapons in the course of a dispute – two hatchets, a hammer, a wheelbrace and a towing eye.

He is also accused of violent disorder along with another named man and others, all at Adam Court, Dublin 2 on July 7.

Detective Garda Niall Murray told Judge Michael Walsh he arrested Mr Majeed for the purpose of charging him at Pearse Street Garda Station at 10.54pm last night.

He was present at 11.09pm when the accused was charged in his presence.

Mr Majeed, from Warrenstown Close, Blanchardstown, made no reply to either of the charges after caution and was handed copies of the charge sheets, Det Gda Murray said.

He sought an eight-week adjournment as the DPP’s directions were not yet available, he said.

“There is quite a large, lengthy file,” Det Gda Murray added.

There was no garda objection to bail subject to conditions.

Judge Walsh granted the accused bail in his own bond of €200 with no cash lodgment required.

Under conditions, he must sign on three times weekly at Blanchardstown Garda Station, observe a curfew between 11pm and 7am every day, surrender his passport to gardai and not to apply for any other travel documentation.

He must also remain out of Dublin 2.

Applying for free legal aid, defence solicitor Niall Walsh said Mr Majeed was not working and submitted a statement of his financial means to the court.

Judge Walsh granted this after hearing there was no garda objection. Mr Majeed did not address the court and has not yet indicated how he intends to plead to the charges.

Nobody else has yet been arrested in connection with the incident that happened at around 1am outside Lost Lane, formerly Lillies Bordello.
