Hundreds of tons of sand and soil slipped away from the 130ft cliffs on Thursday and crashed on to the beach below at Mundesley in Norfolk. It trimmed 4ft from a clifftop garden at a house converted into five flats. But tenants are refusing to panic. Sarah Cameron, 54, who lives in a ground floor flat, said: “This is a lovely place to live and I am going to stay.
“Cliff falls happen and we expect them. We know properties here are going to succumb to the elements at some point, but I don’t think it is going to happen for some time yet.”
Meanwhile, retired Lynne and Rik Hammond moved from Luton after paying a cut-price £122,000 at auction for their semi nine years ago.
Mrs Hammond, 61, said: “It might happen again, but we’re pretty confident this house will be here longer than we are. It is worth it because of the views. Every day the sea looks different and I wouldn’t swap it for anything.”
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “The coastline is continually eroding. It’s impossible to predict when the next piece might fall.”
