Worshippers horrified as man injured in 'drive-by shooting' near mosque
A man suffered serious injuries in a ‘drive-by shooting’ in Huddersfield.
Armed police descended on Clara Street at around 2.30pm on Friday after reports of a firearms discharge.
Officers found a man with injuries they have since described as ‘serious but not thought to be life-threatening’.
Mohammed Mahfooz, 70, who was in the nearby mosque attending Friday prayers said: ‘I heard two gunshots. I heard someone had been shot.’
He told Yorkshire Live: ‘Everyone was shocked. After the prayers finished people went out to see what had happened.’
An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, said a car had been circling the mosque ‘waiting’ for the victim to come out.
They told the website: ‘It was a drive-by shooting, an ambush. There wasn’t any time to waste, his family and friends were treating him with towels trying to staunch the blood flow.
‘So, instead of waiting for an ambulance they bundled him into their car and took him to a hospital.’
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: ‘Police were called to Clara Street, Huddersfield, at about 2.32pm on Friday (June 11) to a report of a firearms discharge.
‘Armed officers attended and police scenes were established on Clara Street and nearby.
‘A man was located who had suffered an injury. He is now being treated for injuries described as serious but not believed to be life threatening.’
Enquiries are ongoing into the exact circumstances of the incident.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Kirklees CID on 101.
Information can also be given online or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
