A rare single malt whisky has set a new auction record for the most expensive wine or spirit sold, fetching 2.1 million.

The bottles of Macallan 1926 went under the hammer on Saturday at Sotheby’s auction house in London.

The selling price was more than double the estimated value. These limited edition bottles were reportedly not for sale but were instead given to The Macallan’s top clients.

Previous auctions of similar bottles have produced spectacular results, with a comparable one fetching £1.5 million in 2019.

The head of the auction house’s whisky department mentioned that he had the opportunity to sample “a small amount” of it in advance.

Describing the experience, Jonny Fowle told the AFP news agency that the whisky is “very rich, it’s got a lot of dried fruit as you would expect, a lot of spice, a lot of wood”.

Sotheby’s revealed that the 40 bottles from the 1926 cask were identified by different labels. Two bottles had no labels, up to 14 had the iconic Fine and Rare labels, and 12 had Sir Peter Blake’s artwork on them.

In addition, Valerio Adami, an Italian painter, designed 12 bottles, including the one that set the record on Saturday. The whereabouts of the 12 bottles of The Macallan Adami 1926 are unknown.
