Dr Margaret Harris, from the World Health Organisation, said getting vaccinated remained the most important thing people can do to combat the virus. On people’s plans for Christmas, she said the public should think about questions such as “Who is coming? What is their status? Have they all been vaccinated?”

Speaking about lockdowns, Dr Harris said they work but not without an impact on people and business.

“We prefer not to see lockdowns, a big lockdown, because they have huge economic implications, they have very severe social implications and mental health implications.

“However, they do work. So governments do get to a point when the hospitals are overwhelmed, where they run out of options.”

WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the pandemic could be ended in 2022 if 70 percent of the population of every country has been vaccinated by the middle of next year.
