Woman wakes up to find six sheep chilling on her garage roof

It was a snow day in Manchester yesterday, with the houses and cars looking icy.

Imagine the scene. You get up and walk to the window to see the blanket of white – and find six sheep looking back at you from your garage roof.

It’s like something out of Wallace and Gromit’s ‘A Close Shave’, but that’s what happened to Ella Aldred, who was surprised to see the woolly animals had managed to make the three foot jump from the garden.

She said they regularly wander down off the moors into her housing estate in Whitworth, near Rochdale.

They roam the estate after coming down from the nearby hills, eating
grass and plants from gardens and verges.

But they don’t usually explore further than that.

The garage roof is covered in ivy, so they may have been keen for a snack.

Sheep aren’t known for their athleticism, so we’re not quite sure how they managed to get up there. Perhaps we have underestimated sheep.

Ella said: ‘They’re regular visitors. You see them wandering round the
estate quite a lot.

‘I think they’re coming down from the moors looking for something green to eat because it’s covered in snow up there.

‘But they’ve eaten all my plants now, so there’s nothing left for them.

‘I’m not bothered though.

‘They’re only plants – as long as they’re getting something to eat it’s alright.’

It seems they may have been inspired by the Llandudno goats, who ‘took over’ the Welsh town during the first coronavirus lockdown.

Or maybe they were a little more obscure, and had been reading about this crab who boarded a train to Gloucestershire.

Either way, we salute their pioneering spirit to go where no sheep has gone before.
